Jesus says, “The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment.” This, in my view, is the only place in the New Testament where Jesus tells us about the work of the Holy Spirit outside of the Church. And this three-fold conviction of the Holy Spirit is a message that turns the world upside down in Jesus’ disciples’ day as well as our own. It is a message the Church desperately needs to hear and needs to communicate to our world today.

There is, perhaps, no clearer statement on the necessity of a relationship with Christ Jesus for the living of the Christian Life than Jesus’ statement in John 15:5: “Apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, Your mercies are new every morning; and though we deserve only punishment, You receive us as Your children and provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant that we may heartily acknowledge Your merciful goodness, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen!
