Jesus’ Tears and His Temper

In today’s Gospel Reading, we see two important truths. First, when Mary and the Jews are grieving deeply, Jesus feels their grief and shares their tears. Secondly, there is a word that most English versions translate as deeply moved or greatly troubled though it actually means to snort or bellow with anger, and it most often used for animals in their response to a threat or an attack. So, the question naturally arises, who or what is Jesus angry with?

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, during His earthly ministry Your Son Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead. By the healing medicine of the Word and Sacraments pour into our hearts such love toward You that we may live eternally; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Confrontation & Comfort

Christ was not afraid of a confrontation. He spoke truth to power with the Pharisees and called King Herod a fox. Before Him, Jeremiah also told truth to power. Jeremiah almost lost his life for this, and Jesus did. However, Jesus’ ultimate confrontation brings us the ultimate comfort. By confronting sin, death, and the devil, Christ triumphed. Through His resurrection we may know the comfort that comes from knowing Him.
